Sonya Lachelle Das, JD - Arbitrator & Mediator Lawyer

Sonya is an experienced Alberta lawyer with a strong background in family law, dispute resolution, and litigation. Since being called to the Alberta Bar in 2013, she has represented individuals and families in a wide range of complex legal matters, with a particular focus on family law issues including parenting, guardianship, child support, spousal support, property division, adoption, and family agreements.

Sonya brings more than a decade of legal experience to her dispute resolution practice. Her career has included roles as an associate with several Alberta law firms and as the founder of her own legal practice serving Central Alberta. Through these experiences, she has developed a practical, client-focused approach to resolving disputes while helping parties navigate difficult transitions with professionalism and respect.

Having appeared before all levels of court in Alberta and worked extensively with negotiated settlements, court applications, and family law trials, Sonya understands both the emotional and legal complexities that families face during separation and divorce. Her background in litigation provides valuable insight into the risks and costs of contested proceedings, while her commitment to resolution helps parties work toward durable and meaningful agreements outside of court.

Sonya earned her Juris Doctor from Bond University and holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary. She has been recognized for her advocacy and negotiation skills throughout her legal career, including nominations and awards for negotiation, cross-examination, and academic presentation. She is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Calgary Bar Association, and the Association of Women Lawyers.

In addition to her legal practice, Sonya is actively involved in her community through mentorship programs, volunteer initiatives, and support services for vulnerable individuals and families. Her commitment to service, combined with her extensive legal knowledge, allows her to approach mediation and arbitration with empathy, impartiality, and a focus on practical solutions.

Outside of her professional work, Sonya enjoys giving back to her community and values opportunities to support individuals in reaching positive outcomes during challenging times. She is fluent in English, speaks advanced Hindi, and has conversational abilities in Assamese.
